Generic information skills for first-year students UTT0010
The Information Literacy Course in generic information skills for all incoming first-year undergraduates starting in September is arranged centrally as a part of the curriculum programme UTT0010 Organization of Studies.
The face-to-face training classes for groups cover the basics: how to select a topic and develop research questions, how to select, search for, find, and evaluate information sources.
The Web-based training contains practical stepwise search construction guides and exercises how to effectively search in the Estonian libraries online catalogue ESTER and efficiently find journal articles in the full text database EBSCOhost Web. The test consists of five exercises.
The main objectives of IL course are to provide opportunities and resources for all students to develop information literacy knowledge and skills and to assist in the integration of information literacy into the teaching and learning process.
- How to use the library?
Overview of library services and information resources: library card, opening hours, borrowing and renewing books, returns arrangements. Introduction to information searching: traditional and electronic information sources.
Duration: One lecture.
- Information Literacy: what is it? Learning to use information effectively is a key part of university education. You will learn how to identify relevant information resources; how to search for information; how to formulate a basic information search strategy; how to create a search query; how to find books and journals; how to find out which databases are best for your subject area and how to search them; how to critically evaluate information sources; and how to cite to avoid plagiarism.
Duration: Two contact hours in the library classroom by arrangement with Library staff.
