Specialized Information Retrieval: Chemistry and Materials Technology SRO5051

This is a web based 10 hours time-lenght course of 5 parts. Each part consists lecture with literature owerview and assignments on determined topic. After completion of the course students will be able to use reference sources, online catalogues and databases in the field of chemistry and materials technology, identifiying which types of resources are most appropriate for selected topics, to develop and implement an effective search strategy, to analyze resourses critically for validity and suitability for their research project, to write a literature survey on chosen theme.

Part I
Introduction to Course. Aims of the course. Search process. Effective search strategy. Evaluation search results. Compiling a list of information sources with reference to chosen topic.
Assignment 1 corresponds to the material in the first part of the course,

Part II
TUT library services and catalogues. Estonian Libraries Network web: Electronic catalogue  ESTER. e-journals database A-to-Z. Chemical literature reference sources in the TUT Library.
Assignment 2 corresponds to the material in the second part of the course.

Part III
Using online databases in area of science and technology: Proquest Science Journals, Blackwell Synergy, Compendex, Science Direct, citation and analyzing databases: Web of Science, Journal Citation Index, Scopus.
Assignment 3 corresponds to the material in the third part of the course.

Part IV
Using online databases in area of chemistry and materials technology: ACS Publications, SciFinder Scholar, FSTA. e- books:  ebrary, Knovel, Referex Works in the TUT Library. Searching patent information via online databases and on the Web.
Assignment 4 corresponds to the material in the fourtht part of the course.

Part V
Chemical Information on the Web. Internet resources. Search engines. TUT Library subject gateways : Chemistry: Selected Internet resources for chemistry contains links to factual sources on the Web.
Assignment 5 corresponds to the material in the fifth part of the course,

Final paper
Writing a short overview about information retrieval process consisting analyze and evaluation tools and databases used for finding literature for chosen topic.
